September 26, 1864. Racial tensions in Five Points come to a head as the body of an Irishman is discovered lynched and hanged. While all evidence points toward a black pastor as the murderer, Corcoran has doubts. As the people of New York cry for a hanging, Corcoran is forced to question every piece of evidence with the help of Doctor Matthew Freeman. The Morehouse family attempts to capitalize on the situation by eyeing new parcels of land in the Points that may become available if the city panics. Meanwhile, the search for Corcoran’s missing wife unexpectedly lands in the hands of Eva Heissen – though Corcoran is entirely unaware.

26 septembre 1864. Le corps d´un Irlandais est retrouvé lynché et pendu, et tout semble accuser un Afro-Américain d'être le meurtrier. La famille Morehouse tente de tirer profit de la situation en gardant l´œil sur des parcelles de terre qui pourraient se libérer advenant une nouvelle émeute.

26 september 1864. De raciale spanningen in Five Points bereiken een bloedige climax wanneer het lichaam van een gelynchte Ier wordt aangetroffen. Hoewel alle sporen in de richting van een zwarte predikant lijken te leiden, heeft Corcoran zo zijn twijfels. Terwijl het volk luidkeels de strop eist, onderzoeken Corcoran en dokter Freeman nauwgezet elk stukje bewijsmateriaal. De Morehouses spelen handig in op de panieksituatie door een oogje in het zeil te houden voor vrijkomende percelen in Five Points. De zoektocht naar Corcorans vermiste vrouw belandt intussen, en buiten zijn weten om, in de handen van Eva Heissen.
