The attack on Pearl Harbor - often called the worst military disaster in American history - shocked the U.S. The world wondered how it was possible for a great military power be so utterly defeated by a country barely out of the Medieval stage. To many, the official explanations of misguided assumptions and missed clues did not begin to account for the enormity of the catastrophe. They argued that a plot was hatched in Washington to solve FDR’s "problem" - his need to convince a reluctant nation to fight the Nazis. Soon after the attack, "alternative" explanations arose… It has been argued that U.S. intelligence officers had in fact tracked the Japanese attack fleet as it approached Hawaii, but that President Roosevelt and his advisors withheld vital information. It is also argued that the U.S, having broken the Japanese naval codes, were actually aware of the Japanese plans but failed to inform the commanders at Pearl Harbor. Days before the attack FDR and his closest military aides sent a secret cable to the Pearl Harbor chiefs telling them to "stand down." And American intelligence intercepted a message from Tokyo asking its spies in Hawaii to map the harbor at Pearl for an imminent air attack. More than six decades later, the controversy over Pearl Harbor still boils under the surface of recent American history. It ignites heated debates over collusion, intrigue, and thousands of American dead.

On June 5, 1968, just after midnight, Robert Kennedy was fatally wounded in the pantry of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles following his victory in that night's California presidential primary. The armed assailant was taken into custody the same evening and was later identified as twenty five year old Palestinian immigrant, Sirhan Bishara Sirhan. He is still in prison to for the assassination of Senator Kennedy. Four days after the shooting, the Los Angeles Police Department and the FBI formed Special Unit Senator (SUS), a group tasked with investigating the shooting. The members of SUS were keenly aware of the importance of the investigation. Their rallying cry of ‘not another Dallas’ evoked painful memories of the widely maligned Dallas Police investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In the course of the seven month investigation, SUS concluded that Sirhan was the lone gunman. Three months later, on 14 April, 1969, Sirhan was convicted of first degree murder and later sentenced to die in California's gas chamber. His sentence was altered to life imprisonment in 1972 after the California Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty was unconstitutional. It was widely accepted by the press and the public that Sirhan was the lone gunman. However, this perception changed in the mid 1970s when a researcher named Greg Stone uncovered an intriguing FBI report on the case. It suggested that more bullets may have been found by police in the pantry than the investigators later claimed Sirhan fired.
At 8:18 PM TWA Flight 800 takes off for France. After just 13 minutes, the plane explodes in mid-air, eight miles off the coast of Long Island, NY. All 230 passengers and crewmembers are killed. Relatives are forced to wait for TWA to release an official list of the passengers who were on the plane - a lengthy process, as TWA needs to account for last minute cancellations and standby passengers. The list is finally released, but now they must endure the painfully slow victim identification process. The delays bring tensions to the boiling point. Investigators believe that the tragedy may not have been the result of terrorism, but of faulty aircraft design. The NTSB issues a series of urgent recommendations to the Federal Aviation Administration, stating that center fuel tank volatility is an issue that must be addressed immediately. Four years after the explosion, the NTSB formally concludes that an explosion in the centre fuel tank destroyed the plane. The board also finds that the wiring in many aircrafts is dangerous. In a series of detailed and emotional interviews with families of victims, eyewitnesses and investigators, this episode will recount the events surrounding the explosion of TWA Flight 800, as well as how each of the lives of those involved in the incident have been irreparably changed.
