Mt. Airy, N.C. is representative of a Norman Rockwell America and is best known for being the inspiration for "The Andy Griffith Show;" however, it also is the place where five prisoners escaped from the local jail and went on a spree that inspired a local songwriter to pen "Surrey Country Jail Break" from a poem left behind in a stolen truck by one of the escapees. Next, it's on to Okeene, Okla. for the Annual Okeene Rattlesnake Roundup, an event that features a "Den of Death" pit where hundreds of writhing, hissing, poisonous, snakes can be found, and where the snake hunter with the biggest rattler wins bragging rights and respect from the locals – and possibly a trip to the hospital.
