In the 2nd Century BC, Celtic tribes established prosperous cities dedicated to trade along the Amber Road and the Danube. But external threats to their society forced them into smaller fortified settlements known as oppida. This marked the beginning of the decline of the Celts in Central Europe.
Die Kelten breiten sich in ganz Europa aus. Von etwa 450 vor Christus bis zu dessen Geburt expandieren sie bis nach Kleinasien. Doch dann stoppen plötzlich mächtige Gegner ihre Erfolgsgeschichte. Die Römer und Germanen zwingen viele Keltenstämme in die Defensive. Sie werden sesshaft und bauen befestigte Siedlungen. Doch viele wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse zeigen inzwischen: Diese Festungen markieren zugleich den Niedergang des keltischen Volkes. Archäologinnen und Archäologen untersuchen den letzten Abschnitt der La-Tène-Zeit ab 200 vor Christus, in dem sich die keltische Lebensweise drastisch verändert. Funde belegen, wie das keltische Zimmerhandwerk aufblüht und neue Techniken den Bau großer Festungen und geschützter Siedlungen ermöglichen.
Após pilharem todo o Mediterrâneo e se tornarem os mercenários mais valorizados da época, os guerreiros celtas regressaram às origens, estabelecendo uma sociedade bem estruturada que retomou o controlo da Rota do Âmbar. Esta nova prosperidade teria também lugar em outros povoados a norte dos Alpes, como a atual vizinha Manching, na Alemanha, onde foi descoberta a maior cidade celta tardia, no século passado. Porém, os povos que migravam do norte da Europa e a expansão do Império Romano constituiriam uma ameaça para os Celtas, que abandonariam as suas vilas expostas nas planícies e se fixariam em povoados fortificados nas montanhas – os oppida. Isto marcou o início do fim da cultura celta que prosperara na Europa Central ao longo de quase sete séculos e cairia em sete décadas.
