When Anthony's rodeo prize calf wanders into the house in the middle of the night, Great-aunt Elroy orders it to be removed from the premises. Anthony and Candy take the calf into town and look for a new owner there. At the fair they finally meet Steve, Tom's father, who adopts the calf gladly as long as he gets to buy it. Neither Candy or Anthony ever possessed or used any money before and have all they need anyway. So, they decide to spend the money on a service. They take a horsemill ride at the fair, but since they are the first customers, they get a free ride. Then the twelve-year-old Candy and fourteen-year-old Anthony decide to eat hot dogs in a diner. When the owner recognizes Anthony as the winner of the rodeo, he gives him the hot dogs for free. Still looking for a way to spend the money on a service, they decide to visit a fortune teller. Candy will have a happy future full of love, but Anthony's cards foretell death. While it upsets Candy, Anthony assures her he is no child anymore and he is not afraid whether he comes to harm or not. They end the day at dusk by climbing the church's bell tower and enjoy the view. They have only two coins left of their money, which they keep for memory's sake.
Un incident révèle que le prix du rodéo était un veau. Ne pouvant le garder, Anthony part avec Candy chercher un moyen de s’en débarrasser avant de réussir à le vendre au père de Tom. Alors ils décident de dépenser leur argent en petits plaisirs, et passent chez la diseuse de bonne aventure qui semble voir un mauvais présage pour Anthony.
Anthony ha vinto come premio al rodeo un vitello il quale finisce per aggirarsi tranquillamente per la casa nel cuore della notte; la zia Elroy spaventata ordina allora subito di portarlo via. Anthony e Candy cercano di trovare un nuovo proprietario al vitello durante la fiera cittadina. Qui incontrano il padre adottivo di Tom che prende con sé volentieri il vitello, arrivando a pagarli profumatamente.
I due decidono di spendere i soldi alle giostre ma, dal momento che sono i primi clienti, possono andarci gratis; scelgono allora di andar a mangiare in trattoria ma il proprietario, riconosciuto in Anthony uno dei vincitori del rodeo, li fa pranzare gratis. Ancora un po' stupiti per la difficoltà che trovano nello spendere i soldi guadagnati, scelgono di andare a far visita al capannone degli indovini dove leggono il futuro.
La chiromante fa loro le carte e predice per Candy un futuro radiuoso e felice, pieno d'amore; ma purtroppo davanti ad Anthony esce la carta numero 13 dei tarocchi, quella indicante la morte. Candy rimane sconvolta ma Anthony la rassicura dicendole che non è più un bambino per credere a queste cose.
Concludono la gita salendo sul campanile della chiesa durante il tramonto per godersi il meraviglioso panorama: hanno avanzato due monete che vogliono conservare come ricordo della bella giornata trascorsa assieme.
