Six months after the events depicted in Bouquet of Barbed Wire and the death of publisher Peter Manson's daughter Prue, in childbirth, Peter made the decision to leave his family and now lives alone. Meanwhile, Gavin is still in close contact with Cassie, who is taking care of Prue and Gavin’s infant daughter, Eve. Gavin has also acquired a new girlfriend, Vicky.
Soothed and relaxed by Sarah's love, Peter finds it easier to be with his wife, Cassie. But she is confused and jealous of Vicky. Gavin's new young friend - and looking after Eve becomes the touchstone to disaster for her.
Peter tries to discover the truth about Cassie and Gavin so he can punish them; but is he punishing himself more? Meanwhile Gavin meets Sarah for the first time...
Peter finally tells Cassie that he is going to divorce her, citing Gavin, but after the triumph of decision he is lonely and desperate to see Sarah. She, in turn, has her own problems, which threaten to destroy her marriage to Geoff.
