In his three lectures, the piano virtuoso Alfred Brendel combines theory and practice in a gifted way: In witty and well-read essays, he introduces the intellectual fundamentals of music, in order to illustrate what has been explained on the keyboard shortly afterwards. Brendel creates a humorous panorama full of amazing insights into the world of classical sounds. These three lectures were presented specifically for audiovisual recording in the rooms of the Salzburg Festival: • The sublime in reverse. About the possibilities of funny music • Musical characters • Light and dark sides of interpretation. "Brendel's character studies [...] sharpen attention for the means of expression by profiling strange things through contrasts and distinctions". (FAZ), "Nobody is able to convey his knowledge so intelligently, so creatively and vividly. [...] Alfred Brendel was and is the poeta doctus of all pianistic poetry"
