Like many early immigrants from India, Bagga Singh came to Canada, in 1913, by ignoring the strict immigration laws which sought to keep Asians like him out. Belle Puri is a well known CBC television journalist in Vancouver. Baga Singh was her grandfather. Belle is aware of her history as a third generation Canadian of Indian origin. The film follows her as she interacts with family members, drawing upon family stories and tying to understand what life would have been like for her grandfather. At another level, filmmaker Ali Kazimi illustrates the history of the Indian community in Canada by referring to his own journey from India in 1983 and using anecdotes from two "old-timers". Canadians will be surprised to learn that Indians were denied the vote until 1947.
