De Gier is single and in his thirties, an impulsive man with no responsibilities except his cat Olivier. Grijpstra is fourty years old with decidedly more responsibility at home. Being married to a working wife and a father, he has plenty reasons to visit De Gier from time to time. Without stating it outright, both men are secretly jealous of each others lives.
