「俺の殺人を言葉で止めてみろ」。太陽新聞社会部遊軍記者の一本木透（玉木宏）に宛てて届いた一通の手紙。そこには首都圏を震撼させる無差別連続殺人の犯行が詳述されていた。犯人は一本木を指名し、新聞紙上での公開討論を要求。新たな殺人を予告する犯人に対し、一本木は報道記者として言葉の力で立ち向かう。やがて、連続殺人犯と新聞記者の前代未聞の対話は、劇場型犯罪として世間を揺るがしていく。
