양반의 자식이지만 천민 신분으로 살아온 업산을 주인공으로 씨종 염동,업산의 젊은 상전 윤오성,오성의 배다른 동생 진성이 주축이 되어 18세기 말에서 19세기 초반을 시대배경으로 엄격한 봉건신분사회가 와해돼가던 조선조 후기 민초들의 삶을 그린 작품이다.
