常言道“石中有火，不打不出；人心有佛，不修不显”，故事由一班不好好修行，而行差踏错的的神仙开始。降龙、伏虎只顾著在天庭吃喝玩乐，民间的疾苦一概不理，甚至感到厌恶。玉女只顾著打扮，不去修道，一有空就只知道跟哮天犬玩耍。二郎神仗着自是玉帝的亲戚，到处横行霸道，还纵容他的哮天犬到处乱跑乱叫、破坏花草、更偷吃降龙伏虎的斋菜。如此这般的神仙、罗汉一见面就吵翻天。 而横跨天地的恩怨就由一根树枝引起，玉女跟哮天犬玩耍的时候，不慎将树枝掷到降龙的斋菜中，盛怒下的降龙错脚将哮天犬踢死。降龙知道自己大祸临头，于是想出一个鬼点子，打算先偷月老的千依百顺散给玉女，然后叫玉女偷观音的回仙露，使救哮天复活。谁知道一错再错，错喂玉女情根深种丸。观音大士大兴问罪之师，降龙罪无可恕，但是玉女和哮天犬也责无旁贷。结果他们全被判下凡间再次修行。如果降龙无法化解哮天犬的仇怨，及玉女的情深，就得生生世世沦为畜生道。 临别依依，情根深种的玉女跟降龙约定在凡间相认，口中念著︰“十年生死两茫茫，不思量，自难忘，千里孤坟无处话凄凉，纵使相逢应不识，尘满面……
