故事發生在時間和地點皆無法判明的超未來。 世界由高度發達的網絡（軟體）和作為其現實載體的超構造體（硬體）所構成。本該是得益於科技繁榮發展的人類卻由於一場災難喪失了連接網絡的資格和能力（相當於公民權）。 沒有了支配者的AI依據管理規定開始排除失去了網絡連接資格的人類。而忘卻了曾經的繁榮的人們，只能在管理系統的陰影下苟且偷生。本作的舞台就被設定在這樣一個人類日漸衰亡的世界。
