In 1979, at a time when the world was seemingly falling apart, Bob Dylan, named Literature Nobel laureate in 2016, discovered God and the Christian religion for himself. In this "born again" period until 1981, he released three faith-inspired albums and toured with a number of great musicians. In her documentary filmmaker Jennifer Lebeau alternates rare or never-seen concert and rehearsals with Christian "sermons" spoken by Hollywood actor Michael Shannon. This spiritual period in the singer's career from the late 1970s to the early 1980s has been somewhat forgotten in public perception. Now, for the first time in the film, this time comes alive again. The archive material was lost for decades and comes in part from the acclaimed "Bootleg Series", which Dylan has put together with his team of rehearsals and performances. The concept for this documentary goes back to Bob Dylan himself. He wanted this combination of the two dramaturgical elements that flow through the film: one should be embodied by the preacher, the other by his music. The lyrics of Luc Sante are understood as an emotional journey - from anger to outrage and sadness to hope.
