Ruth Handler was born as Ruth Marianna Mosko. She was a writer, known for a number of Barbie movies as well as the creator of the Barbie doll. Ruth and her husband started Mattel in a Los Angeles garage. The doll was named after her daughter Barbara and Ken was named after her son.
