Prolific writer William Sydney Porter, better known by his pen name O. Henry, was a writer of short stories, although he also wrote poetry and non-fiction. From December 1903 to January 1906 he produced a story a week for the New York Sunday World magazine and also wrote for other magazines. The O. Henry Prize, given annually to outstanding short stories, was established in his honour in 1919.
