United States Marine Corps Tommy Riordan (Tom Hardy) visits his father, Paddy Conlon (Nick Nolte), a recovering alcoholic who has returned to his Catholic faith. Tommy had to run away from Paddy with his dying mother when he was just a boy due to Paddy having previously been an abusive alcoholic, and has never quite forgiven him. Paddy tries to convince him that he has changed, but to no avail. The next day, Tommy enters a gym where, in less than a minute, he beats unconscious a professional fighter named Pete "Mad Dog" Grimes (Erik Apple), in a fight which is filmed with a cell phone and later uploaded to the internet, where it goes viral video. Tommy learns about a winner-takes-all mixed martial arts tournament called Sparta in which the winner will receive $5 million. Tommy asks Paddy to help him train for the tournament, but only under the condition that Paddy does not try to reconcile their relationship.

Un padre deve aiutare il figlio marine a prepararsi fisicamente per vincere un violento torneo di arti marziali senza regole. Alla stessa manifestazione partecipa anche il figlio più grande, accendendo così la rivalità tra i fratelli.

Ancien Marine brisé, Tommy Conlon rentre au pays et demande à son père de le préparer pour un tournoi d’arts martiaux mixtes qui lui permettrait de gagner une fortune. Personne ne sait ce qu’il espère faire de cet argent. Le propre frère de Tommy, Brendan, décide lui aussi de s’engager dans la compétition pour essayer de sauver sa famille. Entre les deux frères, les années n’ont pas adouci les rancœurs. Immanquablement, les routes de Tommy et de Brendan vont bientôt se croiser. Au-delà de l’affrontement qui s’annonce, pour chacun, quelle que soit la cause qu’ils défendent, il n’est pas seulement question de remporter un prix, mais de mener le combat d’une vie…

Un veterano de Vietnam abandona el mundo de las artes marciales mixtas para trabajar en una fundición de acero. Sus graves problemas con el alcohol han destrozado a su familia, pero llega un momento en que, arrepentido, deja la bebida y decide entrenar a su hijo más joven para que participe en un torneo de artes marciales, en el que también participará su hermano mayor.
