Par désœuvrement et par curiosité, un homme, vivant dans l’oisiveté, tente de se distraire en suivant des inconnus dans la rue. Sans se cacher, il cherche à tout savoir de leur vie et s’évertue à reconstituer leur histoire. C’est ainsi qu’il s’attache, au hasard de ses pas, à un curieux personnage se prénommant Jimmy, professeur d’américain. Exaspéré, Jimmy décide de lui parler.
