Dans le grand salon d'une belle maison de l'Ile-de-France, un homme infirme, Richard Varnet, est assis dans un fauteuil roulant... mort. Chacun des membres de sa famille est un suspect en puissance : sa femme qui a un amant ; son fils, adolescent névrosé ; sa mère, dure et volontaire ; son infirmière, jolie et ambitieuse. Un étranger mêlé de curieuse façon à cette histoire mène l'enquête et devient le confident de tous.
