独身の長距離トラック運転手、“一番星”こと桃次郎は、姫路のドライブインでアルバイト中の女子大生、瑛子に一目惚れしてしまう。桃次郎は彼女に気に入られようと無理をして、自分が文学青年であるかのように振る舞うことに。やがて桃次郎のトラックに当たり屋の男、松吉がぶつかるが、松吉は桃次郎の相棒“やもめのジョナサン”こと金造が出会った小学生姉弟の生き別れた父親だった。桃次郎は松吉の再出発に力を貸そうとする。
