Un moine bouddhiste incarne Bashô, le grand poète japonais, et suit les traces de son journal de voyage à travers le pays, à pied et parfois à cheval. En route il compose plusieurs de ses fameux haïkus. Un film sur la poésie, la méditation, une vision presque «zen» d’une nature inviolée, originelle, comprise comme un paradis perdu.
