After been told so often by his father that he will never amount to anything, Joel Parker has no confidence in himself. When he goes to college, he becomes the butt of many jokes, but he has one friend, Abbie Nettleton, a girl who runs a confectionery store. Because he is such a blunderer, Joel is allowed to wear a baseball uniform and sit on the team bench, just for luck. The big game attracts Joel's father, who comes to see his son play ball. All during the game, Joel's presence is a joke until a twist of circumstances gives him an opportunity to go to bat at a crucial moment. A flash of determination and a bit of luck enable Joel to become the hero of the house as he smashes a home run across the backfield fence. His confidence restored, Joel wins Abbie's love and a new perspective on life.
