Der Amerikaner Ferris und der Chinese Ng kämpfen 1945 Seite an Seite im malayischen Dschungel gegen die Japaner. Danach bleibt Ferris in Malaysia, Ng geht nach Moskau. Als acht Jahre später Terroristen in das Land einfallen, um die Briten zum Abzug zu zwingen, stehen sich die ehemaligen Freunde als Feinde gegenüber.

Al acabar la Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939-1945), el Mayor Ferris (William Holden), un oficial norteamericano, decide abandonar el ejército y quedarse en Malasia para dedicarse al cultivo de una plantación. Vive con su novia Dhana (Capucine), una bella nativa que conoció durante la guerra. Años después, el ejército británico trata de convencerlo para que le ayude a capturar a un antiguo compañero de la resistencia (Ng,Tetsuro Tamba) que se ha convertido en uno de los líderes más activos del movimiento guerrillero comunista y que ha secuestrado a Candace Trumpey (Susannah York), hija de un colono británico.

V tomto dramatu ztvárnil William Holden Ferrise, amerického vojáka, jenž vedl vojáky v Malajsii během druhé světové války. Když válka skončila, Ferris se rozhodne zůstat v Malajsii, aby zde nalezl štěstí. Investuje tam do pozemků a daří se mu docela dobře, ale do jeho nového života s místní dívkou Dhanou brzy zasáhne lokální politika. Candace, dcera britského guvernéra v Malajsii, se do Ferrise slepě zamiluje, což logicky začne ohrožovat jeho vztah s Dhanou. Navíc se objeví jeden z jeho spolubojovníků z války, Ng, který přinese znepokojivé zprávy. Po válce strávil několik let v Sovětském svazu a nyní je u komunistických partyzánů. Ferris nechce pomáhat Britům v dopadení svého starého kamaráda, ale tomu by zjevně nevadilo dostat do potíží svého přítele Ferrise. Film byl natočen na motivy románu Michaela Koena.
