Reaching for the Moon

In 1951, New York poet Elizabeth Bishop travels to Rio de Janeiro to visit Mary, a college friend. The shy Elizabeth is overwhelmed by Brazilian sensuality. She is the antithesis to Mary’s dashing partner, architect Lota de Macedo Soares. Mary is jealous, but unconventional Lota is determined to have both women at all costs. This eternal triangle plays out against the backdrop of the military coup of 1964. Bishop’s moving poems are at the core of a film which lushly illustrates a crucial phase in the life of this influential Pulitzer prize-winning poet.

Pendant les années 1950, aux États-Unis, la poétesse Elizabeth Bishop, persuadée de ne pas avoir de talent, décide de s'offrir un voyage au Brésil afin de se ressourcer. Sur place, elle rencontre l'architecte Lota de Macedo Soares. Elizabeth, timorée et pudibonde, ne tarde pas à tomber sous le charme de cette femme libre et créative.

Elizabeth Bishop é uma poetisa insegura e tímida, que apenas se sente à vontade ao narrar seus versos para o amigo Robert Lowell. Em busca de algo que a motive, ela resolve partir para o Rio de Janeiro e passar uns dias na casa de uma colega de faculdade, Mary, que vive com a arquiteta brasileira Lota de Macedo Soare. A princípio Elizabeth e Lota não se dão bem, mas logo se apaixonam uma pela outra.
