It's the Christmas season, the spirit of which which isn't present in Edgar Kennedy's house because of the on-going feud between him and both his mother-in-law and brother-in-law. Edgar's feud extends to his family doctor, who stops by Christmas Eve to wish his family a Merry Christmas. That feud is because Edgar refuses to pay his outstanding bills to the doctor. On Christmas, Edgar's wife, Florence, believes she mistakenly gave him poison - some of her brother's chemicals used in his photography work - instead of his medicine, that poison which is supposed to result in an agonizing death. Florence's brother knows that she really did give Edgar his real medicine, and as such co-opts the doctor to get back at Edgar by playing on the fact that Edgar thinks he's dying.
