Physically separated from her father and at odds with her distraught mother, a girl must negotiate her own passage to maturity.
When her parents separate and her father moves out, Renko, a bright and energetic sixth-grader, is left alone with her mother, Nazuna. As Nazuna sets out new rules for their life together, Renko -- who is naturally confused yet determined to reclaim her sense of love and security -- makes plans of her own, doing her best to make sure that any more changes happening in her family happen on her own terms.
In this exquisitely poignant tale, director Shinji Somai transcends the tropes of stories of children dealing with divorce, crafting instead a delicate, indelible work in which an unforgettable teenage girl encounters the unknown and refuses to succumb to it.
Winner, Best Restored Film, 2023 Venice Film Festival.
