Durante la Guerra Civil Española, el gobierno republicano creó la Junta de Defensa del Tesoro Artístico, con el objetivo de preservar las obras del Museo del Prado y evitar que fueran destruidas en el transcurso de la contienda. La película reconstruye las vicisitudes y el recorrido de esas obras de arte, desde que fueron embaladas en un total de 1.868 cajas hasta su llegada a Ginebra. Allí se creó un Comité Internacional para el Salvamento del Tesoro Español, y se custodiaron las cajas hasta su regreso al museo, el 9 de septiembre de 1939.
