1988년 8월, 미국 유학생 여주인공 이향은 유학생 친구들과 사하라 사막 여행길에 오른다. 알제리의 타만라셋이라는 도시에 도착한 그들은 밀수업자로 오인을 받게 되고 출국금지 명령을 받아 낯선 땅에 억류된다. '향'은 호텔 앞에서 우연히 터어번을 두른 동양남자와 마주치고 그둘은 짧은 3분의 만남을 통해서 어떤 운명적인 예감을 느낀다.
