Hundhotellet börjar med att det är rötmånad och att det regnar. Den konstnärlige taxen Picasso övertalar sin kompis, den lufsige hunden Sture, att de måste åka på semester till Paris, konstens och kärlekens huvudstad. Hundarna ger sig iväg i Stures husses bil men de kommer aldrig fram till Paris, och någon semester blir det egentligen inte heller, men de får i alla fall en mycket händelserik resa.
