Glass Johnny: Looks Like a Beast

さいはての北海道、稚内の昆布採りの娘みふねは貧しいため、人買いの秋本に売られたが、酌婦を嫌って逃げ出した。見知らぬ男－－ジョーが汽車賃を払ってくれた。彼は競輪の予想屋で、惚れぬいた若い選手の宏と函館へ向う途中だった。函館の競輪場でみふねはジョーとめぐり逢い、宿屋までついてきた。風呂から出た彼女は見ちがえるほど美しい。けもののように襲いかかったジョーは、女の眼にあふれる涙を見て思わず突き放した。純真なみふねはそれ以来、ジョーから離れようとしない。優勝したことのない宏は調子のいい自転車が欲しいといった。仲間が五万円で譲ってやるというのだ。ジョーは顔馴染の飲み屋のマダム由美に借金を申し込んだが、競輪をやめて昔の板前に戻れと意見された。そんなとき、みふねを追ってきた秋本と殴り合いの大ゲンカをした。翌日、ジョーはみふねをチャブ屋のおきく婆に三万円で売り飛ばし、由美からも二万円とって宏と汽車に乗った。人のいない競輪場で、欺されたと知らぬみふねがジョーを待っていると、秋本に捕まった。一方、宏はジョーが眠っている隙に、情婦の和子と汽車を降りてしまった。計画的にジョーを裏切ったのだ。秋本は函館駅でかねて恨みを抱く男に肩を刺され、病院に運ばれた。みふねは優しく看護した。人身売買で退院と同時に刑務所へ送られる身の秋本は、自分を捨てた妻の消息を聞いて病院を脱走した。ひとり残されたみふねは、苦労を重ねてようやく稚内へ辿りついたが、母や妹たちはどこへ行ったか判らない。奇しくも、ジョーと秋本がこの土地へやってきた。この浜はむかし、ある詩人が「ガラスのジョニー」の唄をみふねに教え、海に身を投げた場所である。心の中のジョニーを求めてみふねが海に入ったとき、ジョーが救った。「もう放さねえ。俺にはお前がいるんだ」とジョーは叫んだ。
