L'ufficiale della Marina Militare, Capo Arena, già comandante di una nave in disarmo, ricostruisce l'ultima fase della seconda guerra mondiale e rievoca un episodio dell'8 settembre 1943. Al comando della nave, sulla quale è imbarcato il figlio, prende una drammatica decisione che riguarda le sorti dell'equipaggio.
