Die junge Cellistin Paula verliebt sich Hals über Kopf in den Neurologen Georg Ellis, den sie zufällig in der U-Bahn kennen lernt. Eine stürmische Liebesgeschichte beginnt, sehr zum Leidwesen das Gitarristen Leonard, der Tür an Tür mit Paula wohnt und schon lange für sie schwärmt. Als Paula ein Baby erwartet, scheint ihr Glück vollkommen, doch das Kind kommt viel zu früh und stirbt. Georg flieht in seine Arbeit und nimmt einen Ruf nach New York an. Paula will nicht mit. In ihrer grenzenlosen Einsamkeit ist plötzlich einer für sie da – Leonard.
