After World War II, Europe is in ruins and help is badly needed everywhere. One person who is trying to make a difference is the doctor Jørgen Vedel who takes the Red Cross to Vienna to vaccinate children. Here he meets the girl Leni, who has been in Auschwitz, where she lost her mother. Jørgen now arranges it so that Leni can come to Denmark, where she can start a whole new life.
