In the final days of World War II, Corporal Rudi Kleinschmidt was accused by military prosecutor Wilhelm Schramm of stealing two boxes of Scho-Ka-Kola from Luftwaffe rations. Kleinschmidt claims to have bought it from Dutch black market dealers. Schramm is asking for the maximum sentence, the death penalty, for theft of state property, sabotage, and undermining troop morale. On the way to the place of execution at the edge of the forest, Stramm signs the death warrant when enemy planes attack the convoy. Schramm and the firing squad flee. The guard lets the condemned man escape. In his flight, Kleinschmidt retrieves the signed execution order.
