After witnessing disease and poverty in the slums of New York, Italian immigrant Francesca Cabrini embarks on a daring journey to persuade the hostile mayor to provide housing and healthcare for hundreds of orphaned children.

Mère Frances Xavier Cabrini était une religieuse catholique italo-américaine qui a fondé les Sœurs missionnaires du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus, un institut religieux qui a apporté un soutien à ses compatriotes italiens immigrés aux États-Unis. Cabrini, qui a vécu de 1850 à 1917, a été la première citoyenne américaine à être canonisée comme sainte par l'Église catholique, le 7 juillet 1946 par le pape Pie XII, après avoir rendu la vue à un bébé.
