Tallinnas tapetakse kuulus ordurüütel – kangelane, kes vabastas Läänemere piraatidest. Nüüd on ta pea maha raiutud ja suu münte täis topitud. Kadunud on kuldkett, mille ta alles samal päeval ostis. Kohtuhärra Wenzel Dorn võtab mõrvapaigale kaasa noore apteekri Melchior Wakenstede. Noormees on nagu verekoer, kes oskab ka surnutega rääkida. Melchiori nutikus ja Dorni oskamatus viivad aga selleni, et kogu mõrvaloo lahendamine jääb apteekri õlule.
