Le 16 juillet 1942, en plein coeur de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Paul, un étudiant, apprend que la police a totalement bouclé le quartier Saint-Paul, à Paris, pour arrêter tous les juifs qui y vivent. Révolté, il veut tout mettre en oeuvre pour sauver le maximum de vies. Il se rend auprès d'un ami qui refuse de l'aider. Le jeune homme persévère et rejoint le quartier, complètement investi par les forces de police. Il essaie de persuader les juifs de renoncer au port de l'étoile jaune et de s'enfuir.
