The hoaxters of the title, who are compared to carnival snake-oil salesmen, promote totalitarian ideas, including fascism, Naziism, and communism. After a review of the fall of fascism and Naziism resulting from World War II, the film presents a short history of Russian communism and warns of its dangers to the American way of life.
