Seriál sleduje přátelství dvou moderních černošek Issy a Molly, které se musí vypořádávat s celou řadou nešťastných zážitků a svérázných soužení.

Issa Dee verdient ihren Lebensunterhalt bei einer wohltätigen Bildungseinrichtung. Als moderne, afro-amerikanische Frau hat sie diverse Herausforderungen zu bestehen, die auch mit ihrer Zugehörigkeit zu der Bevölkerungsminderheit zusammenhängen. Ebenso geht es ihrer besten Freundin Molly. Die hat zwar im Job jede Menge Erfolg, von ihrem Liebesleben kann man das aber nicht sagen. Auch Issa hat hier nur bedingt Glück: Ihr langjähriger Lebenspartner Lawrence ist seit längerer Zeit arbeitslos, leidet an Depressionen und scheitert daran, sein Leben wieder in den Griff zu bekommen.
