山口鳴海は、未婚・子なしの一人暮らしを謳歌(おうか)していた。しかし、憧れていたキャリアウーマンの伯母が思いもよらない孤独死をしたことをきっかけに、焦って婚活を始めてしまい撃沈。年下の同僚・那須田優弥から「結婚すれば安心って昭和の発想ですよね？」とバッサリ切り捨てられ、鳴海は「婚活」から180度方針転換して「終活」について考え始める…。 これは、30代後半独身の主人公が、時に世間の常識に傷つきながら、時に誰かと比べてしまい落ち込み、時に居て当たり前に思っていた周囲の人々に感謝しながら、よりよく死ぬためによりよく生きる方法を、這(は)いつくばって模索する物語。
