On his way to his own wedding, promising young physician Damon South is killed in a tragic auto mobile accident. Shortly after his death, Damon's closest friends are taken to a theatre to view Damon's video testament. To their surprise, they discover that he has left his big apartment complex, 'The Ancestral Pile', to them. But Rebekah, the woman who was set to marry Damon, has never gotten along too well with his friends. She has a whole different idea about Damon's legacy.
Rebekah makes it perfectly clear that only she is the rightful heir to the 'Ancestral Pile' because she's carrying Damon's baby. Aaron moves into the 'Pile' and demands his attorney Avery to pay him his trust fund because Aaron has met the neccessary terms (gotten himself a University degree). Angela is still wrecked with guilt after Damon's death. At his big house-warming party, a careless Aaron gives Angela some designer drugs - with dramatic consequences. Bronwyn falls for Daniel Freeman, a good-looking artist she works with at the gallery. However, there are others too interested in Daniel. Hugh continues to persue Aimee and wonders how she knew Damon.
Aaron discovers that the reason why Avery refuses to pay out his trust fund is because he has embezzeled Aaron's money and made personal investments with them. However, Avery has dirt on Aaron too; he knows that his University degree is false. Mia, Ryan's friend and co-worker, asks Ryan to be a sperm donor so she and her sterile husband can have a child. Aimee's line of work is driving Hugh paranoid. Shocked after catching Daniel and Rebekah in a fiery embrace, Bronwyn discovers that this isn't the first moment of passion they've shared. Bronwyn grows curious and starts wondering if maybe Daniel - and not Damon - could be the father of Rebekah's baby.
The gang demands to know the truth about who the father of Rebekah's unborn child is. Bronwyn tries to convince Daniel to take a paternity test, while a furious Rebekah threatens to have Damon's body exhumed in order to obtain evidence that he is the real father. Wiki lands a leading role in a play but later learns that the play is a savage attack on Bronwyn and Aaron's rich family, the Kelletts. Gideon starts dating a model named Siobhan. Stephanie thinks their relationship is unserious and makes a bet with Gideon about his new girlfriend. Rebekah's behavior infuriates several people and the consequences are tragic: late at night, after hearing loud noises, Stephanie and Kristen make a terrible discovery at the 'Pile'.
Rebekah survives her fall down the stairs but loses her unborn child. Everyone wonders who could have pushed Rebekah down the stairs, and Rebekah herself points the finger at Bronwyn. Bronwyn denies being involved but has a hunch who might be responsible. Siobhan finds out she's part of a bet and decides to get even with Gideon. Rebekah moves to New York and sells her gallery to Bronwyn. Too late, Bronwyn realizes that Rebekah has tricked her and is stuck with huge debts. Meanwhile, Josh moves into Rebekah's vacant penthouse apartment in the 'Pile' in order to get closer to Kristen, whose affection he lusts for. Unfortunately for Josh, computer nerd Nevin is giving him competition.
A little girl is stuck under a tanker and is asking for her children's TV idol Stephanie. Steph blankly refuses to risk her life for a young girl. Until she starts considering the media opportunities that is. Bronwyn reads the script for Wiki's play and is shocked by the slanderious attack on the Kelletts. Bronwyn runs to her influntial uncle, Ernest Kellett, in order to get the play stopped. Josh and Nevin continue to fight for Kristen's affection. With Rebekah gone, the gang have to take care of everything themselves. They agree to slip the costs in ten, and Gideon decides to move in with Josh at the penthouse.
Ryan meets Michael, whom he instantly falls in love with. Unfortunately for Ryan, it turns out that Michael likes drag, which Ryan himself can't stand. Stephanie's mother Aileen tries to make contact with her daughter again but is coldly dismissed. Bronwyn, however, feels pity for Aileen, and asks her to stay. It turns out that Aileen has dramatic news about Stephanie's father. Gideon struggles with financial debts and asks Aaron for advise on how to get some cash. Aaron comes up with a plan that isn't exactly legal. Angela and Kristen are both unemployed and decide to become full-time 'slackers'. Bronwyn and Wiki continue to fight over the Kellett play.
Hugh runs into Helen, a woman he met on vacation in Bali. The problem is that he told Helen he works as a war photographer in Bosnia. Hugh is forced to keep up his charade but how long will it work? Ryan refuses to go to Mia's transvestite night at The Lava Lounge; resulting in fighting with Michael. Gideon receives his insurance money and pays down some of his debts. Later, Roger Merritt offers Gideon money in exchange for inside information from his work. Stephanie's father, Carl, claims he got infected with AIDS through a blood transfution. This, however, turns out to be a lie and so Aileen has to be tested as well...
Kristen is helping Mr. Crabtree with maintenance work at the 'Pile', when she and Josh accidentally get locked in the laundry room. Josh is thrilled; thinking this is the moment where he can finally tell Kristen about his feelings. Gideon wonders how Roger Merritt could know about his car insurance scam and confronts Aaron about it. Still struggling with her gallery, Bronwyn employs Zoe and Seth, two eccentric artists whose provocative and erotic art causes much fuzz. Wiki is thrilled to have landed a leading role in the B-movie 'Lone Hunter III' opposite good looking actor Nick Vogel. However, during the shooting of the film, Wiki is subjected to a horribly cruel surprise.
Bronwyn's conservative gallery landlord, Mr. Llewellyn, threatens to evict her unless she gets rid of Zoe and Seth and their provocative exhibit. Bronwyn fails to mediate but, surprisingly, Aaron takes it upon himself to help Bronwyn and uses some highly unorthodox methods. Gideon is increasingly frustrated by Siobhan's heavy drug use. It all culminates during an important banquet with the Minister of Justice when Siobhan arrives completely high, crawls under the table and passes out. Wiki refuses to press rape charges against Nick and instead blames herself for what happened.
Wiki orchestrates a plot to get back at Nick. She fills her prop gun with real bullets and plans to kill him during the shooting of one of the action scenes. Angela opens her new law firm but there are few clients. Instead, Angela spends her time day-dreaming in her new office. Frustrated over not getting anywhere with Kristen, Josh meets an attractive forty-ish woman named Leonie and takes her home. However, Josh has a nasty surprise in store. Gideon orders Aaron to stop giving drugs to Siobhan but after a fight with Gideon, a depressed Siobhan steels drugs from Aaron and gets into big trouble.
Siobhan survives her drug overdose and recovers at the hospital but a furious Gideon holds Aaron responsible and punches him. Josh is mortified to discover that Leonie is Kristen's mother and is positive that all his chances with Kristen are spoiled for good. Stephanie is annoyed by the presence of Derek, a puppeteer who is doing some guest work on her children's TV programme. The producers seem to like Derek, though, and make him permanent co-host. An enraged Stephanie plots to get rid of Derek. Bronwyn and Hugh are frustrated by their respective love lives and decide to contact a video dating agency. Aaron finds a new girlfriend but she isn't quite what she seems to be.
Rose Crabtree is going to participate in a tango contest for the last time but her chances of winning the price are crushed when her long-term dance partner Ricardo falls and breaks his leg. Aaron is eventually persuaded to step in as a replacement. Stephanie writes fake complaint letters about Derek to the producers of her show but the plan backfires. Kristen fakes illness in order to trigger Leonie's maternal instincts but her mother is more concerned with Josh. Hugh is hurt to find out that Bronwyn doesn't remember that they kissed last night. Nicky and her partner Ross Palmer bug Aaron's flat.
Derek infuriates Stephanie by making a puppet resembling her, which he names 'Little Steph'. Creeped out by Derek's increasingly psychotic bevahior towards her, Stephanie tries in vain to prove to her producers that Derek is crazy. Angela gets her first case but it's doesn't turn out too well thanks to a nightmare client. Aaron is still totally unaware that Nicky is an undercover cop investigating his drug dealing. However, Nicky is starting to get a little too attached to Aaron.
Stephanie learns she is to receive an award from her TV company but in light of what happened to Derek, she feels she doesn't deserve any award. Michael meets Ryan's parents for the first time and accidentally mentions that Ryan has acted as sperm donor for Mia. Ryan's parents are shocked. Kristen hacks onto Gideon's computer and is shocked by what she discovers. Wiki is excited to get a part in an ice cream commericial but it turns out she may have been cheering a bit too soon.
When Gideon arrives at work, he is questioned by his boss; someone has leaked information to Roger Merritt. Gideon becomes very nervous. Bronwyn dispairs after not being able to get a job. None of the others understand why she who is so rich even needs a job. Ryan tries to help by letting her work as a waitress at the Lava Lounge; with dramatic consequences. Hugh falls for Wiki's gym instructor Debra and asks her to move in with them, but is this such a good idea? Nicky's superior, Ross, is getting impatient and wants to bust Aaron. He orders Nicky to plant drugs on Aaron.
Debra and Hugh decide to keep their love-making a secret since Wiki doesn't approve of sex between room-mates. Wrecked with a guilty conscience, Gideon is ready to confess to leaking the information to Roger Merritt. However, someone else has already taken the blame. Ross wonders whether Nicky is capable of separating between work and pleasure as far as Aaron is concerned but lets her keep on doing her job. At a beach party at the Lava Lounge, Aaron receives an unexpected ""gift"" which gets him in trouble.
Aaron is interrogated by Ross, who assures him he's not after him, but Avery, the man behind Aaron. Aaron reluctantly agrees to cooperate and is forced to pretend towards Avery that he and Nicky are still a couple. Hugh is crushed after Debra's one-night stand with Gideon and eventually demands her to move out. Debra, however, puts Hugh under pressure. Kristen deliberately sabotages the photocopier at her work because she's obsessed with the repairman's cute buns. Debra makes the moves on Stephanie.
Debra convinces Wiki and Stephanie that Hugh has mistreated her. Wiki and Stephanie believe her and demand Hugh to move out. After being the victim of a robbery, Josh makes a list of things he has to do before he dies; including reconciling his parents and declaring his love for Kristen. The corrupt Ross decides to get of rid of both Aaron and Avery; a violent blood-bath ensues.
Josh is embarrassed after his love declaration and avoids Kristen. Ryan and Michael are having love problems too. Ryan finally realizes he really loves Michael but Michael has been seeing someone else. Having seen through Debra's false act, Wiki, Stephanie and Hugh hatch a plot to get rid of her; playing on Debra's vanity. Nicky tells Aaron that the autopsy report proves that Ross and Avery shot each other. It looks as if Aaron is off the hook, however...
Aaron's uncle, Ernest, arrives in town with a brilliant lawyer to defend him of the murder charges, but Aaron insists on being defended by Angela, even though she lacks experience. Unfortunately, Angela messes up in court and Aaron is denied bail. Stephanie and Hugh get drunk and decide to have sex but problems occur. Ryan grieves over his break-up with Michael and receives support from Mia. Bronwyn and Wiki are working on a museum exhibit about the Maoris and discover there's a curse on the Kellett family!
Aaron's case is going badly and Angela knows her chances of winning are small. Nicky is unable to help her because all the evidence of Ross' corrupt dealings are destroyed. Angela doesn't give up, however, and discovers some new, interesting evidence which leads her to Ross' mother. Bronwyn has a strange dream about herself (as her grandmother) kissing Wiki's new boyfriend Cam. She realizes she's jealous of Wiki. Angela is furious when Aaron tells her he still loves her.
Bronwyn's dream comes through as she kisses Cam at the museum. However, they are observed by Wiki and the consequences are fatal. The unemployed Gideon is offered a job by an old friend but it's not a nice job. Ryan accompanies Mia to her lamaze class when her husband is unavailabe. He starts wondering if he'll be able to keep away after the baby is born. Hugh decides to start taking photos of real people, including an alcoholic derelict named Vernon.
Stephanie receives news that her father has died but ignores it. Instead she works on a pilot for a game show where couples find out how well they fit together. Stephanie has the perfect particpants for the show: Josh and Kristen. Hugh is pestered by Vernon and isn't able to get rid of him. Wiki decides to forgive Bronwyn in order to save their friendship.
Angela discovers she's pregnant and the father is Aaron. She considers an abortion but then Aaron shows up again. Stephanie receives her father's ashes and isn't sure what to do with them. Hugh is about to develop strong feelings for a close friend. Uncle Ernest is dead-set on breaking up Cam and Bronwyn and he gets too worked up for his own good.
Uncle Ernest is comatose after his collapse and Bronwyn is wrecked with guilt. Cam convinces Bronwyn to get married but his intentions aren't all good. Hugh tells Wiki how he feels about her. Mia goes into labor and Ryan must accompany her to the hospital. Can he deny his father-instinct for much longer? Meanwhile, Angela must make a decision about her baby.
