최불암 김상순 남성훈 조경환 노경주로 이뤄진 5명의 시경수사과 특별수사본부의 수사관들이 박 반장을 중심으로 실제 일어났던 실화(범죄)를 해결하는 활약상을 그림. 수사의 방법이나 기술적인 문제보다는 휴먼 스토리에 초점을 맞춘 인정 수사물이요, 단순한 수사물로서가 아닌 당대를 살았던 사람들이라면 누구나 공감했던 그 시대의 아픔을 고스란히 녹여낸 수작. 범죄자에 연민을 부여하는 묘사는 [수사반장]의 특징. 1971년 3월 6일 첫 방송을 시작해 1989년 10월 12일 막을 내리기까지 [수사반장]은 무려 18년 동안 수사극의 왕좌를 지킴. 그덕에 각 방송사는 수사물의 성시를 이룸.
