เมื่อเมื่อปี ร.ศ. ๑๑๒ นักล่าอาณานิคมชาติตะวันตกต่างหมายมั่นที่จะยึดครองแผ่นดินสยามไว้ ให้เหมือนกับประเทศอื่นๆ ในภูมิภาคใกล้เคียงกัน ชาวสยามเหมือนไร้สิทธิที่จะปกครองตนเองอย่างสิ้นเชิง แม้ว่าเราจะไม่ได้ตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของพวกนักล่าอาณานิคมเหล่านั้นก็ตาม แต่ชนชาวสยามก็พยายามพิทักษ์รักษาเสรีภาพไว้อย่างสุดความสามารถ แม้กระทั่งเดนทาสคนหนึ่งผู้แทบจะจบชีวิตครั้งแล้วครั้งเล่า ยังเข้าร่วมฟันฝ่าอุปสรรคและขวากหนามอันแสนลำเค็ญทั้งปวงนั้นด้วยจิตใจอันกล้าหาญ
