柳方兩家是患難之交，雙方父母因此為腹中的胎兒指腹為婚。不料天意弄人，方家女兒天生聾啞，為了道義，柳家拒絕方家退婚。二十年後，方家女兒依依多才多藝，才貌出眾，而受到新思想的柳靜言卻對指腹為婚深惡痛絕。誰料新婚之後，美麗善良、温柔典雅的方依依逐漸感染了柳靜言，二人漸漸成為了恩愛夫妻。但不幸的是，殘疾女兒的誕生給家裏帶來沉重打擊。在靜言的堅持下，再次懷孕的依依被迫打掉了一名男嬰，從此在她心中對靜言充滿了強烈的恨意。無奈之下，靜言遠走到日本，並與一藝妓結為夫妻。十年後，靜言無意之中看到多年來依依寄來的數封信件，得知妻子依依已經原諒了自己，並且一直在等待着自己回來，於是靜言帶着思念立即返家。雖然依依早已原諒了靜言，只留下靜言無語問蒼天！
