世界30か国以上のアーカイブから、収集した貴重な映像と回想録や証言等で20世紀を描いた番組である。山根基世のナレーションによる無駄のない淡々とした進行、メインテーマ「パリは燃えているか」を始めとする加古隆の手がけた音楽も、大きな反響を得た。回想録や証言を朗読する声の出演は青二プロダクションが担当している。
