姑蘇城仁清巷內的葫蘆廟住着一名叫賈雨村的窮書生，他受鄉宦甄士隱的資助，上京赴考，中了進士，做了官。只因他貪贓枉法，不上一年就被革了官職。他來到揚州，做了巡鹽御史林如海的幕客，教林黛玉唸書。過了一年，林如海的妻子去世，林黛玉由賈雨村護送，到了京都榮國府。賈雨村因此得到黛玉舅父賈政的幫助，不上兩月，便復職選任金陵應天府，從此，官運亨通。
