貧しい浪人の伊右衛門は、跡継ぎのいない民谷家に婿入りすることになった。病で顔がただれ、美貌を失った民谷のひとり娘・岩は、家名を残すためだけのこの縁談を嫌い、夫となった伊右衛門に心を開こうとしなかったが、いつしか真摯な彼の姿に心打たれ、深く愛し合うようになる。そんなある日、伊右衛門は上役にあたる筆頭与力・伊東に呼び出される。伊東は、かつて岩に想いを寄せながら拒絶されたことを今も恨みに思っていた。
